Streaming videos may be considered as good instruction materials. They may be
used during presentations, lectures in classes, or even when you just wanted to know about or how to do something. This type of media requires you to be online since the location of the videos is from a remote machine. This would also mean that you have to stream the media every time you’re going to use it and streaming rate would depend on your bandwidth. Downloading the video would definitely answer this problem. You should also have an FLV player to play the downloaded video. VLC supports FLV files.
There are many applications and download sites available to download videos from streaming services like YouTube. For Mac OSX users, here are two ways to perform this task.
1. Using Safari’s Activity feature – This may be done on any streaming media services like YouTube or Google Videos.
1a. Fire up Safari and open the page with the movie to be downloaded. Let the video finish loading. On the Safari menu, click Window>Activity or press Command+Option+A. This will bring up the Activity window.
1b. In the Activity window, look for the entry/file that has the largest file size (usually more than 1 MB).Notice that almost all other entries have kilobyte (KB) file sizes. If you don’t see a list of files, click the arrow beside the page title.
1c. Double click the file to start downloading. This will be saved in your Downloads folder. Rename the file to any filename and append the “.flv” for its extension name.
2. Using MacTubes – This applies to YouTube video searches. Download MacTubes first then install the app.
2a. Run MacTubes. A blank window similar to iTunes will appear. On the search pane (upper right corner), type in your keyword related to the video(s) you want to download and press Enter/Return. Results will appear afterwards. Other results may be viewed by clicking the arrow buttons at the bottom of the window.
2b. Right click on your selected video and you’ll be given options on what to do with your selection. You may play the video, add to a created playlist, do a filtered search, and download the file – as an MP4, FLV, or high definition.
2c. After selecting the download format, MacTubes will start downloading. During the process you may still look for other videos and download using the same process. Shown below are two videos being downloaded simultaneously.
The files are saved on your desktop but you may change this location on MacTubes preferences. You may download MacTubes for free from the Version Tracker website.
