“IsThreadDesktopComposited” Error

I was done with my “library” source image for cloning. I was able to upload it to the Fog server. And, yes, I was able to deploy the image to a target workstation. I tested the imaged PC – ran several programs and apps, checked the network. Then I fired up Firefox and this error popped up:

Error when opening Firefox

Error when opening Firefox

It says that Firefox could not locate the entry point “IsThreadDesktopComposited” in the User32 DLL (Dynamic Link Library). Did a search and found answers.

It’s not a Firefox problem. That’s why reinstalling or upgrading Firefox (from 3.6.3 to 3.6.4) didn’t solve it. I found out that this only happens to Windows XP. The culprit is the “dwmapi.dll” file found in the System32 folder. Dwmapi.dll is a Windows Vista file that may have been installed in the said location by another program.

To fix the problem, open C:\Windows\System32 folder. Locate and delete dwmapi.dll. Restart Firefox to check if the problem still occurs.

Friday is Free Day – CCleaner

Everybody loves freewares – from audio editors and graphics design to games and computer maintenance. If you can just maximize or use it efficiently, you’ll get almost the same result as its paid version counterpart.

My thumb drive is full of freewares πŸ™‚ and I use them most for computer maintenance. I just thought of sharing them and that’s how the “Friday is Free Day” concept came up. Every 1st and last Fridays of the month, I’ll feature freewares that may be essential to computer users. It could be for Windows, Linux, or Mac. If you want a freeware to be featured, send me an email at aenguillo [at] gmail [dot] com.

CCleaner

CCleaner

First up – CCleaner.

With this freeware from Piriform, you can recover drive space as it removes unused and useless files like history, temporary files, and cookies created by web browsers. On the other hand, Windows’Β  Recycle Bin and Recent Documents folder are cleaned while temporary and log files are deleted. However, only the current user’s temporary files and folders are cleaned.

CCleaner also has a registry cleaner to locate and fix problems in the Registry. An msconfig-like utility is also added which alters Windows’ startup programs. And finally the program may also be used to uninstall programs.

This application is now on version 2.31. It was rebuilt in C++ and is compatible to 64-bit versions of Windows. If you’re having problems with your current version of CCleaner, it is advised that you install and download its version 2.

You may download CCleaner from Piriform’s website or from FileHippo.

Customize User Account Picture in Windows 7

Here’s one tweak tip to customize your Windows 7 experience. We’ll add a customized picture or an image you really like for your Windows 7 user account. First, using a photo editing software, edit your image to make it have a 128 x 128 pixels dimension and save it as a bitmap (BMP). Move your edited image to:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\Default Pictures

Using the User Accounts applet on your Control Panel, you may now browse for your customized image to use it as your account photo.

Below is a screenshot of my User Account applet as I change my account image.

You may save your edited photo as JPEG but Windows will not display a thumbnail image of it. I think this also works for Windows Vista.
